The photos are wrong. Amalfi and the surrounding Massa Lubrense are impossible to capture with a lens. The enormity, expanse and awe cannot be felt second-hand because you miss the birds exuberantly chirping, wind whipping your clothes from the top of a hillside church, the serenity of looking at seemingly endless rolling hills and the stark drop of earth to sea. I could post a slew of photos but there is another Amalfi, one that’s zoomed in and textural. Colorful tiles, walls encased in flowers, rusted steel and chipped plaster that seamlessly support this place and silently add to its beauty.
